Is acupuncture a good acne treatment?

Acupuncture for acne treatment

Many people suffer from acne and need acne treatment, I was one of them. I remember that sore and annoying feeling before they would erupt through my forehead skin. It wasn’t nice at all and I couldn’t help myself, I would squeeze them! I didn’t know, at fourteen years old, that acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered the primary treatment for acne and many other skin problems in China.

How does acupuncture assist with acne treatment?

Some people might ask ‘how does acupuncture work for pimples?’ Well, the reason is that acupuncture treatment targets the meridians where imbalanced energy flow occurs. There are many reasons why certain people get pimples and some don’t. In Chinese Medicine, the occurrence of acne is due to blood heat in Lung meridian or disharmony of Chong and Ren meridians or because of accumulation of damp heat in the internal organs and channels. Thus, a different acne treatment approach is adopted for each individual case.

Blood prickling and letting is sometimes used to assist one’s acne treatment plan. It may take a few sessions for one to see the benefits, however in some ‘stubborn cases’ a longer treatment plan is essential. I recall one very successful case of mine where the twenty-nine-year old young female client had only one treatment and all her pimples were gone within a week. This is a very rare case and most people take several sessions to see the results.

Traditional Chinese medicine for acne treatment

Some natural Chinese herbs such as Scuttellaria (huang qin), Lonicera japonica (Jing Yin Hua), Phellodenbrium (Huang Bai), Viola yedoensis (Zi Hua Di Ding), Rhemannia root (sheng di) or Tree peony root (mu dan pi) and others may use to assist clearing and detox.

It is highly recommended to consult your Chinese Medicine practitioner to design a suitable plan to treat your skin issues instead of buying formulated herbal packages online. A registered acupuncturist and herbalist are able to identify and treat the root of your skin issues instead of taking pills blindly.

As a practitioner, I do my own acne treatment whenever I have skin problems like pimples or skin rashes. It is interesting. I go swimming often but only sometimes I get bad skin rashes around my eyes as I am allergic to the rubber band on the goggles. My mom used to worry about that and I think she yelled at me when she first saw the rash and said ‘oh, no, those skin rashes are going to be darker and permanent, you will become ugly’. Well, that’s my mom. I inserted needles to my skin even when I give acupuncture treatment to clients. They were all surprised and shocked about those needles in my face. After a few sessions, the rashes had cleared. My mom is convinced about the magic needles treatment and now requests treatment regularly.

There are some people who have tried acupuncture for acne treatment and have had wonderful experiences

Facial acupuncture was initially used by concubines in ancient china to maintain their healthier and younger looking skin. Cosmetic acupuncture has since been recognised and widespread through the world in the last few decades. Celebrities like Celine Dion in Hollywood use acupuncture regularly to naturally replenish their skin.

In my practice, I believe a ‘green mind’ is as important as a healthy body. Our ‘green’ spiritual world sometimes plays a

bigger part in our daily stressed life. Clients, after treatment, often say to me “oh, I feel so relieved by lying here”. Yes, my treatment is not just aiming to detoxify your skin but also to expel toxic, stressful emotions.
